“Five Summers” is the brand new single from D&B masterminds Blu Mar Ten! Spawning from the mid to late 90’s big beat, drum & bass outbreak, Blu Mar Ten have maintained a strong presence in the electronic music scene for 16 years!
Founded in London, England by the duo of Leo Wyndham and Chris Marigold, Blu Mar Ten has expanded into a trio with the addition of Mike Tognarelli in 2004. Although Blu Mar Ten often get lumped in with the late 90’s jungle, drum & bass movement, their musical style is not confined to that genre. On the 2003 LP “The Six Million Names of God”, Blu Mar Ten experimented with a more ambient, downtempo sound. This continued with the release of their expansive 2007 LP “Black Water.” The widening of their sonic palette has gained them recognition from highly esteemed DJ’s such as: Felix da Housecat, Erol Alkan, and Mary Anne Hobbes (!) to name a few. Their adventurous sound ranges from downtempo, chillout to house, breakbeat, and left-field techno akin to big names like Amon Tobin or Squarepusher.
Blu Mar Ten is highly underrated as they have often been overshadowed by bigger names in the drum & bass genre like Amon Tobin. However, their new single “Five Summers” could change all that. “Five Summers” is possibly Blu Mar Ten’s most accessible song, but I don’t mean this in a bad way. The song screams summer, beginning with shimmering synth and a sizzling neon melody before a stuttering maraca beat dives in. The second song “Still the One”, their collaboration with InsideInfo, is a fast-paced D&B banger that is more suitable for the clubs. Blu Mar Ten are set to release a new album around late 2011 and if these two tracks are any indication of what it will be like, we are in for a treat!
