Mizuha 罔象 is a new label out of Tokyo founded by artists Luna Woelle & Ichiro Tanimoto. For their inaugural release, entitled Biosphere, they have compiled 21 tracks from a finely curated selection of experimental producers loosely based upon the notion that humans share a subconscious remembrance of the primordial past. As stated in the press release: ” I believe all humans have a shared nostalgia for a long-forgotten primal era: the smells, the sounds and the air that once covered earth. I want to try to resurrect these latent memories by collecting audio-based expressions of this nostalgia from artists all over the world into a compilation, as a kind of experiment.”
One of such expressions is Yoshitaka Hikawa’s “Pointer.” On this track, the Tokyo-based producer takes cues from Lorenzo Senni’s pointillistic approach to sound design, overlaying staccato piano passages with high frequency distortion and arpeggiating synth stabs. Sudden tempo changes impart the track with a tense unpredictability, destabilizing the listener’s sense of resolution. Listen in full below.
Biosphere will be released 03/09/21 digitally + special edition SD card via Mizuha. Pre-order here.
