The Barcelona-based imprint angoisse, known for their catalogue of stylized, avant-leaning club music, are expanding into single track releases with a new digital sub-label: simulate. The sub-label will serve as an outlet for more regular single track digital releases from a selection of artists embodying the notion of ‘utopic’ and experimental club music. The first of such artists is Shayu, a DJ/producer from Zurich who creates ambient, grime-inflected soundscapes that have been featured in various multimedia works, including a recent video with South Korean dancer Hee Eun Jeong. Shayu also recently released an EP of original productions for London’s Coyote Records and next, she is working on a performance piece with a French rapper for a Swiss art institution.
On “A Still Present,” Shayu immerses the listener in a hi-def landscape of icy synths and deep, multiform percussion. Processed vocal samples cut through the layers of rhythm, transporting the listener into a hypnotic, club reverie. Shayu’s strength lies in her ability to balance floating, ethereal atmospherics with profound low-end and hybridized drum programming. “A Still Present”arrives as a strong first installment in the simulate series and a testament to Shayu’s vivid, cutting-edge sound design.
